Teens make mistakes, and parents are often overwhelmed and frustrated. However, I encourage you to think of mistakes as a wonderful opportunity to learn.


How To Empower Your Child

For many of us around the Austin Family Counseling office, “PD” is a commonly used acronym. Standing for Positive Discipline, we use this parenting model in our sessions with clients, in parent sessions, and in our own parenting lives. I was skeptical of the model at first – no punishment? no rewards? I asked myself, “How do you get your kids to do what you want?”   At that moment, I realized I was asking the wrong question. A better question would have been, “How do I encourage my child to ___________ on his own?” You can fill in the blank with your specific hope, but the point is that we are questioning how to develop long-term skills in our children versus short-term obedience. I’m not sure about you, but I want my children to develop skills like independence, confidence, kindness, empathy, and responsibility. I want to be less concerned about my children trying to gain my approval and my desire to be “minded”, and more concerned about developing my children’s internal locus of control, believing that the events in their lives are caused by controllable factors such as their effort, preparation, and attitude.

This inevitably translates into my work with clients, as I try to help them develop their own internal locus of control. Many of my clients are tweens and teens and I find that the Positive Discipline tool of using empowering statements instead of enabling statements helps to develop more long-term skills and the internal locus of control.  Try this simple activity to understand how to empower your child.

Notice what comes up for you when you read the following statements:

“I can’t believe you procrastinated again. How are you ever going to get things done on your own in college? I’ll help you with the paper this time, but next time you will suffer the consequences.”

“You can have your allowance and cell phone if you do your homework.”

“Okay, I’ll write a note to the teacher that you were sick this morning, but you’ll need to be sure and catch up.”

“I just don’t understand, I excused you from chores, woke you up early, made your lunch do you would have more time. How could this be?”

 

Now notice what comes up when you read the next set of statements:

“What is your picture of what is going on regarding your homework? Would you be willing to hear my concerns? Could we brainstorm together on possible solutions?”

“I’m not willing to bail you out. When your teacher calls, I’ll hand the phone to you so she can discuss it with you.”

“Could we sit down and see if we can work on a plan regarding homework that we both can live with?”

“I can see that you feel bad about getting that poor grade. I have faith in you to learn from this and figure out what you need to do to get the grade you want.”

 

The first set of statements/questions are enabling and, if used regularly, develop an external locus of control. Children expect rewards for doing what’s required of them and they expect that you (the parent) will bail them out. They may also believe that they can’t do it on their own.

The second set of questions/statements are empowering for teens and help develop a child’s internal locus of control. As the parent, you still offer some support to help problem-solve solutions, but you don’t fix it.

For some, this may be a revolutionary approach, so vastly different from what is regularly tried, but I urge you to try using the more empowering statements and see the impact that it can make on you and your child.

I’m Not A Parent, But I Love Positive Discipline

In the past few months I’ve participated in a few Positive Discipline Workshops at Austin Family Counseling. I loved every minute of it even though I am not a parent. How, you ask? Isn’t Positive Discipline primarily a parenting workshop? Yes, but one of Positive Discipline’s tenants is that it challenges the individuals to examine their own thoughts, feelings and beliefs in order to better understand the relationship dynamics they have with others including, but not limited to, their children. Almost everything I’ve learned during my time with Positive Discipline I’ve been able to relate to every important relationship in my life. Positive Discipline is about relating to others, it just happens to be a really good parenting guide!

I would like to share with you my favorite Positive Discipline exercise that has helped foster my own individual growth. The Positive Discipline book calls it “Life Style Priorities” but it’s also known as your “Top Card”. Your “top card” describes a mode you resort to in times of stress and a blueprint for how you navigate your life.

Okay, so let’s find your top card!

Imagine you received four packages from the UPS man today. They are “Meaningless and Unimportance”, “Criticism and Humiliation”, “Rejection and Hassels” and “Stress and Pain”. You are standing there with these four packages, not wanting any of them, but the UPS man says that you can only return one. Which would you choose? Which package would be the most unbearable to live with?
For Example, If you picked the first, your top card would be “Superiority”, you may believe the way to overcome your worst fears (i.e. meaningless and unimportance) you must do more, be better than others, be right and be more useful. Does that sound about right? Just to clarify though, your ‘top card’ is not always a bad thing; it can describe some of your best attributes as well. It is essentially the theme of priorities you deem most important in your life.

To continue, if you picked the second package your ‘top card’ would be Control. The third? Pleasing. The fourth, Comfort.

I also want to include a helpful and informative chart that describes more thoroughly what your Top Card means about you.

What is your partner’s?
