Something about me is that I love filling my commutes to work with a good podcast- learning on the go as I like to say! There is quite a variety of content with podcasts and, as a therapist, it’s important that we stay up to date on the literature so we can best support our clients. Recently, I stumbled upon a podcast channel that really resonated with me while trying to learn more about supporting neurodivergent clients. Aptly named The Neurodiversity Podcast hosted by Emily Kircher-Morris, the show invites guests who are leaders in psychology, education, and other fields to discuss ways to uplift the lives of neurodivergent individuals.
Curious about what other therapists might be listening to, I asked my colleagues at AFC for recommendations and why it would benefit parents. Many of the parents we work with are seeking more information to better support their children’s emotional needs. Because as many of you know, parenting can be incredibly challenging, especially when it comes to navigating the different ages and stages of a child’s development. That’s why I wanted to share these podcast suggestions from some amazing AFC therapists—these resources might help you as parents feel a little less overwhelmed and more empowered in your parenting journey.
Dance & Movement Therapist (R-DMT), Lea Comte, recommends Baffling Behaviors Show by Robyn Gobbel. This podcast takes a deep dive into the confusing behaviors that kids (and adults) sometimes display as a result of their nervous system’s stress response. Robyn and her guests break down what these behaviors can mean and how to better understand and support children through them.
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Emily Vrana, is tuning into Good Inside hosted by Dr. Becky Kennedy, a parent and clinical psychologist. Good Inside provides psychoeducation and honest discussions on difficult parenting topics. Emily appreciates how Dr. Kennedy offers practical problem-solving strategies from a place of authenticity and compassion. Emily shared this quote from Good Inside: “By focusing on the parent behind the parenting and the child behind the behavior, we help families heal—bringing out the good inside everyone.”
Janet Mize, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), suggests Joyful Courage for Parenting Teens. Hosted by Casey O’Roarty, a Positive Discipline Lead Trainer and Parent Coach, this podcast offers encouraging and authentic insights into parenting teens in today’s world. Casey addresses tough topics and provides practical tools to nurture healthy family relationships.
LPC, LMFT, and NCC, Kaity Dallas-Smith, can’t speak highly enough about Dear Therapists, a go-to podcast for parents. Hosted by two therapists, the show presents real client issues discussed in session-style conversations. After sharing practical advice, the hosts check back in with the clients to see how their interventions have worked. Kaity particularly loves episodes featuring adult daughters and their mothers, where they explore the impact of childhood experiences on their relationship.
Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and NCC, Mike Rothschild, recommends Flusterclux with Lynn Lyons, especially for parents or kids dealing with anxiety. Parenting can feel overwhelming, and it’s completely normal to worry. Mike loves how this podcast validates parents’ feelings while offering practical strategies.
It can be hard to know where to start when it comes to supporting your child. What makes it even more difficult is the overwhelming amount of information out there. As a parent, it’s easy to feel confused and lost in the amount of articles, books, and advice. Even in my professional experience, one of the biggest hurdles is simply figuring out where to start. There is so much to learn, and it can feel overwhelming to try and absorb it all. My hope is that these podcasts will offer digestible content that’s enjoyable to listen to. For parents: give yourself grace. We don’t know what we don’t know. While it would be so handy, parenting doesn’t come with a manual, but by seeking out resources like these podcasts, you’re already making a step toward feeling more equipped.
Each of these podcasts shares a sentiment that we all need to hear; parenting is difficult. But more importantly, they offer insights on how to make it a little more manageable. Whether it’s helping you understand your child’s emotional needs or offering practical tools to strengthen your relationships, these podcasts might just provide the guidance you need to feel less overwhelmed and more connected to your child.
