Young Adults (18-30), Adults

Are you tired of being fine? Countless times throughout the week, we are asked “How are you doing?” and the default answer for many is “Fine.” It certainly was for me. “Fine” might not be very descriptive, but it at least sends a message of passive contentment. But for me, in reality, “fine” often meant profound anxiety and unhappiness. “Fine” was shield from emotions and sword to self-examination.

Admitting you are not happy is an incredibly difficult act in an American culture that values strength and toughness (this can be especially true for men). Powering through emotional pain can even be seen as a virtue by some. And when the source of the unhappiness is tied to a career or long-term relationship, pride and ego can have an outsized effect on the choices we make. All these things bedeviled me as I contemplated a midlife career change. When I became open to the idea of being more that just “fine,” my perspective began to change.

I enjoy working with individuals, families, and couples, with whom I strive to create a space where the exploration of clients’ unique life stories will flourish. I believe that the stories we tell ourselves about our lives can have a profound impact on our beliefs and actions. Sometimes, we need to view these stories from a different perspective in order to make the changes we desire, and I aspire to create a place for my clients where they can experience this process for themselves. I consider it a privilege to be trusted to guide my clients across life’s rivers; I hope we can have some fun along the way.

A Little About Me

I am originally from Dallas and graduated from the University of Texas in 2005. After living in Houston for law school and a short stint in St. Paul, MN, I moved back to Austin in 2017. I found the city to be a little less “weird” but still great.
Outside of counseling, I enjoy watching bad movies with my girlfriend, cooking good meals, reading, and playing in an amateur croquet league with a group of friends.
