Understanding Anxiety

Everyone experiences stress from time to time, but when anxiety becomes overwhelming and starts affecting your daily life, it can make even the simplest tasks feel challenging — interfering with work, relationships, and overall well-being. Anxiety can take many forms, from generalized anxiety to panic attacks to social anxiety.

Recognizing the Signs of Anxiety

  • Excessive worry or fear
  • Restlessness or feeling “on edge”
  • Fatigue or trouble sleeping
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Avoiding situations that cause anxiety
  • Physical symptoms like rapid heartbeat, sweating, or stomach discomfort

If any of these symptoms sound familiar, know that you’re not alone, and help is available.

Types of Anxiety We Treat

  • Generalized Anxiety (GAD)

Persistent, hard-to-control worry about everyday concerns that can bring restlessness, tension, and exhaustion.

  • Panic Attacks & Panic Disorder

Sudden episodes of intense fear with physical symptoms like racing heart and shortness of breath — and worry about the next one.

  • Child & Teen Anxiety

Worry that shows up as school refusal, stomachaches, clinginess, or irritability. Our child and teen counselors specialize in age-appropriate support.

  • Social Anxiety

Intense fear of judgment in social settings that makes gatherings, school, or work feel overwhelming.

  • Phobias

Strong fears of specific situations or things that lead to avoidance and shrink daily life.

  • School & Performance Anxiety

Test stress, perfectionism, and pressure to perform — common threads we help students and families untangle.

How We Treat Anxiety at AFC

We take an integrative approach, addressing both the symptoms of anxiety and any co-occurring challenges. Our approach is not about quick fixes but about fostering meaningful, lasting change. Through therapy, we focus on:

  • Building a deep understanding of your unique experiences and the root causes of your anxiety
  • Exploring the connections between anxiety and other challenges, such as past trauma, ongoing stress, or relationship difficulties
  • Providing consistent, compassionate support as you develop sustainable coping strategies

Anxiety often overlaps with…

Depression: feelings of hopelessness or sadness often accompany anxiety, creating a cycle that can feel overwhelming. Stress: chronic stress can heighten anxiety, making everyday situations harder to cope with. Trauma: past experiences can lead to panic attacks or constant hypervigilance. Physical health: anxiety can exacerbate headaches, fatigue, or digestive issues.

FAQs About Anxiety Therapy

Have questions about getting started, fees, or finding the right therapist in Austin? We're here to help.

How do I know if I — or my child — need anxiety therapy?

If worry, avoidance, or physical symptoms are interfering with school, work, sleep, or relationships, therapy can help. You don’t need a diagnosis to reach out.

What happens in the first session?

Your first session is focused on understanding your unique experience — what you’re feeling, when it started, and what’s been affecting you. We’ll talk through your history and goals together, and your therapist will begin building a treatment plan tailored to you. There’s no pressure to have everything figured out; we’ll take it one step at a time.

Do you offer anxiety therapy for kids and teens?

Yes — many of our clinicians specialize in child and adolescent anxiety, using age-appropriate approaches like play therapy.

Do you take insurance?

We don’t accept insurance directly, but we provide a superbill you can submit to your insurance provider for possible out-of-network reimbursement. We’re happy to walk you through how that process works before your first session.

Can anxiety therapy be done virtually?

Yes — we offer virtual therapy to clients across Texas.
