Spiritual Concerns & Faith-Based Counseling

At Austin Family Counseling (AFC), we recognize that faith and spirituality are deeply personal and can profoundly influence your well-being. For many, spirituality serves as a source of hope, guidance, and resilience during life’s challenges. Others may find themselves struggling with questions about faith, religious identity, or the role of spirituality in their lives. No matter where you are on your spiritual journey, our therapists are here to provide compassionate, nonjudgmental support — in person at our Westlake and Northwest Hills offices, or through virtual therapy anywhere in Texas.

A Safe and Supportive Space

Exploring Faith and Mental Health

Our approach to faith-based counseling is inclusive, honoring the diverse ways individuals experience and express spirituality. Whether you come from a specific religious background, identify as spiritual but not religious, or are simply exploring questions of meaning and purpose, we create a space where you can integrate your beliefs into therapy in a way that feels authentic to you.

We support clients in navigating a variety of spiritual and faith-related concerns, including:

  • Wrestling with faith, doubt, or spiritual identity
  • Managing grief, loss, or life transitions through a spiritual lens
  • Healing from religious trauma or experiences of exclusion
  • Balancing personal beliefs with relationships and community expectations
  • Seeking purpose, inner peace, or a deeper connection to spirituality
  • Exploring how faith and therapy can work together in the healing process

At AFC, we understand that conversations about faith and spirituality can be deeply personal. Our therapists are here to listen without judgment, offering guidance that respects your values, experiences, and beliefs. Whether you are looking to incorporate spiritual practices into your therapy, process difficult experiences related to religion, or simply explore how faith and mental health intersect, we are committed to walking alongside you with care and understanding.

FAQs

Have questions about getting started, fees, or finding the right therapist in Austin? We're here to help.

Do I need to belong to a specific religion to seek this kind of counseling?

Not at all. We work with clients from all backgrounds — whether you follow a specific faith tradition, identify as spiritual but not religious, or are simply exploring questions of meaning and purpose.

What happens in the first session?

We’ll take time to understand your beliefs, values, and what you’re hoping to explore or work through. Your therapist will follow your lead on how much spirituality is part of the conversation.

Will my therapist share their own religious beliefs with me?

Our focus is on supporting your beliefs and experiences, not promoting any particular faith or worldview. Therapy here is client-centered, not faith-directed.

Do you offer this support near Westlake or Northwest Hills?

Yes. We have two Austin office locations, one in Westlake and one in Northwest Hills. We also offer virtual sessions for clients anywhere in Texas.

Do you take insurance?
