Self-harm, also known as self-injury, involves intentionally causing harm to oneself as a way to cope with overwhelming emotions or stress. While it’s often associated with adolescents, self-harm affects people of all ages, including adults, and research shows it’s more common than many people realize, with some studies estimating that up to 1 in 5 adolescents have engaged in self-harm at some point. If you or someone you love is struggling with self-harm, it’s important to know that help is available, and healing is possible.
If you or someone you love is in immediate danger, please call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line). If this is a medical emergency, call 911.
