Austin Family Counseling (AFC) is seeking a licensed child and play therapist to join our team as a 1099 contractor. In this role, you’ll operate as a self-employed professional, managing your own taxes, work schedule, and client caseload. We are looking for passionate individuals from diverse backgrounds to fill full-time Licensed Mental Health Therapist positions at our Austin, TX location. Licensure

We welcome clinicians with a variety of licenses, including LCSW, LMSW*, LPC, LPC-A*, LMFT, and LMFT-A*. We value the unique strengths and identities each therapist brings to our team.

Clinicians with RPT-A or RPT are preferred, but not required.

*Must have a clinical supervisor or be in the application process

Qualifications & Skills

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Holds an active and valid license in the state of Texas as an LPC, LPC-A, LMFT, LMFT-A, LCSW, or LMSW (associates must have a clinical supervisor or be in the application process).
  • Ability to be available for in-person client sessions and team meetings as necessary.
  • Treats clients from a family systems perspective, emphasizing interconnected relationships.
  • Believes in therapy as a lifelong process and actively seeks opportunities for continuous learning.
  • Maintains a strong sense of professional identity.
  • Upholds healthy personal and professional boundaries.
  • Maintains a flexible schedule, and is willing to work some evening and weekend hours.
  • Demonstrates prompt responsiveness to clients, fostering reliability and support.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to seek help when needed and an openness to guidance as part of professional development.
  • Maintains a high standard of professionalism, punctuality, and organizational skills.
  • Specialization in Child and Play Therapy:
    • Experience providing individual therapy to children ages 2 and up (1–2 years preferred).
    • Strong knowledge of play therapy theories, techniques, and developmentally appropriate interventions.
    • Ability to assess and treat early childhood emotional and behavioral challenges using effective, age-appropriate methods.
    • Skilled in collaborating with parents and caregivers to support the child’s therapeutic progress.
    • Experience with family therapy with parents and caregivers of small children.

  • Readiness to embrace clinical challenges, including addressing complex topics like “parents,” “families,” “high-risk” clients, and sensitive issues like “suicide” or “divorce.”
  • Demonstrates experience working with, or a strong willingness to work with, diverse populations, including BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled, neurodivergent, non-monogamous, etc.
  • Possesses a business-minded, entrepreneurial spirit, contributing to the growth of own counseling practice.
  • Actively shares referrals and collaborates with colleagues to create a supportive professional network.
  • Provide high-quality, ethical care and are committed to continual learning and professional growth.
  • Value systemic and relationship-based work.
  • Bring compassion, cultural humility, and respect to clients and colleagues, contributing to a supportive, connected, and inclusive community.

  4. Interview Process:
    First-round interviews will be conducted during the week of January 20th.
    Second-round interviews are scheduled for the week of January 27th.
  5. If selected, attendance is expected at the New Hire Orientation scheduled for Monday, February 23rd – Friday, February 27th.
