- Grief & Loss
Are You Dissatisfied With Your Life?
- Are you struggling with the symptoms of anxiety or depression and are looking for answers and relief?
- Do you feel stuck in life or powerless to achieve your dreams?
- Do negative thoughts, feelings or perceptions make it difficult to cultivate healthy relationships or perform well in your career?
- Has a recent life transition caused you to feel withdrawn, fearful or uncertain?
- Do you long to create positive change in your adult life, but feel paralyzed by fear of the unknown?
As children we are often taught that happiness should be as constant as the moon and the sun. But as time and age will tell, climbing the elusive summit of happiness is more difficult than most people think. There are times when we all struggle to feel good about life. Perhaps you’re going through a period in which you are experiencing feelings of loss, sadness, anger, or regret that seem to have no end. These emotions might have been brought on by a number of things, including anxiety, depression or family conflict. Similarly, if you are struggling through a difficult life transition, grieving a death or divorce or experiencing difficulty in your relationships, you may feel overwhelmed and powerlessness to effect positive change. It may seem as though you are no longer in control of your life’s direction, especially if you are unable to move past negative patterns in your life. To numb your pain or fill the void, you may be turning toward unhealthy coping strategies that offer temporary-but-unsustainable relief. These may include excessive drinking, using recreational drugs or over using alcohol, sex or food. Although you may ardently long to let go of anger, fear, sadness and regret, it can be scary to step out into the uncharted waters of growth, change and acceptance.
You’re Not The Only Individual
If you’re feeling angry, fearful, melancholic or numb, the good news is that these feelings are completely normal. Our time on Earth can be both sour and sweet, and no one is handed happiness on a silver platter. Experiencing life fully involves feeling both joy and sorrow, and we cannot know one without the other.
While it’s true that everyone experiences adversity, there are times when seeking outside help can be very useful for adults. If your problems seem insurmountable, if you’re experiencing a profound, unshakeable sadness or are feeling defeated by conflicts in your relationship or career, it may be time to seek the help of individual counseling in Austin. Thankfully, at Austin Family Counseling (AFC) you can learn how to more effectively manage negative thoughts, emotions and experiences. We treat clients facing a variety of obstacles, including anxiety, depression, relationship difficulty, parenting conflicts, LGBTQ issues, PTSD and much more.
Individual Counseling Can Provide You With Strategies and Pathways Toward Relief
At AFC you’ll have the opportunity to speak with an objective, unbiased and compassionate professional. With your therapist serving as your confidant, supporter and guide, you’ll be free to talk about your experiences without the fear of ridicule, shame or disclosure. Our therapists offer a confidential and nonjudgmental environment where you can begin to open up about troubling issues and explore new ways of thinking and being. Your therapist can help you focus on your strengths so that you no longer have to feel defeated by perceived weaknesses. Ultimately, you can rebuild your self-esteem and take pride in your innate capacity for solving problems.
During individual adult sessions you’ll discover more about yourself as a person. In addition to learning about strengths and weaknesses, your therapist can help you identify your coping style, diminish unhealthy coping and set goals for replacing unhealthy coping with healing activities that match your interests and temperament. With these important insights in hand, you can get a clearer picture of what it is you want out of life, explore whether your choices match up with your life’s ambitions and devise a game plan for making positive change. At AFC, you’ll also be learning concrete strategies for managing emotional turmoil, including conflict resolution, anger management, compassionate communication, mindfulness, and much more.
At AFC we practice an integrative approach to healing, taking into account not only the mental, physical and emotional health of our clients, but also their physical, interpersonal and spiritual wellbeing. We consider each individual as unique and therefore cater treatment to the client. Drawing from a variety of modalities and practices, we can match you with a therapist who will understand your specific issues and tailor your therapy plan according to your needs.
No matter how scary or uncomfortable your current situation may be, the emotions you’re experiencing can be temporary. Although overcoming your obstacles may seem impossible at first, you do have the power to triumph over your current situation and create the life you want to live. With the help and support of a therapist who will always act in your best interest, it’s possible to accept both the sourness and sweetness of life and make healthy choices that honor your authentic self.
Perhaps you are ready to try individual counseling, but have some questions or concerns…
Individual counseling is too expensive in Austin.
Therapy can be expensive. However, mismanaging stress and neglecting your mental health can come with much greater costs. You may already be spending a lot of money on coping mechanisms like excessive drinking, gambling or shopping without even realizing it. So, why not redirect those funds toward something that is proven to positively contribute to your mental and emotional health?
I can get through this on my own. I don’t need the help of individual counseling
If your child, mother, sibling, or best friend had a similar problem and wanted to handle it alone, what would you say? You’d most likely want for them to get compassionate support as they work through their challenges. Having the presence of a skilled, empathic therapist can help you move toward growth and change in a more conscious, self-aware and healthy manner. There is no shame in seeking help from others, though we are often quick to deny receiving help ourselves. The better we manage our own struggles the more present and available we can be with those around us.
How can talking change anything?
Simply talking with someone who cares about your wellbeing can be extremely therapeutic in and of itself. However, in individual counseling you won’t just be engaging in talk therapy – you’ll also be learning concrete tools, skills and strategies you can integrate into your daily life. These can give you a greater sense of acceptance and help you more effectively manage things like relationship conflict, anger, anxiety and grief.
