Brooklie Benson Gonzales, LPC-Intern Supervised by Emily K. Slaughter, LPC-S
Welcome! Thank you for being here.
I strive to collaborate with clients to work towards your goals and help you promote inner courage, self-compassion and confidence so you can be the best version of yourself. I hope to help empower clients to lean into vulnerability versus putting up boundaries and shrinking away because of fear. My goal is to create a therapeutic space that is safe and validating, where you are free to be yourself without concern for judgment or criticism. You can expect me to meet you where you are in your life’s adventure with care, kindness and openness.
I am particularly interested in working with adolescents (middle school and older), parents & families, and adult individuals. I find it a privilege to be invited on the journey of a young person as he or she is discovering their identity and practicing interpersonal skills with those around them. I am a natural mediator and I enjoy helping families of all types to strengthen communication and find boundaries that are workable, strong and created from a loving place. I am honored to support, encourage and foster the strengths of adult individuals throughout a variety of life’s challenges, such as: grief/loss, relationship struggles and anxiety. I find value in incorporating mindfulness and attending to overall wellness with all clients. As a parent myself, I love connecting with other parents over the constant joy and commitment (and emotional roller coaster!) that is parenthood.
I have a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin, a J.D. from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, and a M.A. in the CACREP-accredited Professional Counseling Program at Texas State University in San Marcos. I always dreamed of being a professional helper of some sort. I began my career in the legal and nonprofit fields, but after volunteering as a guardian ad-litem with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), I knew I wanted to begin helping people in a more nurturing and empowering way. After obtaining my master’s degree, I have been working with adolescents and their parents in a middle school and in the private practice setting. I have experience in play therapy, sandtray therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. I am a certified Positive Discipline Parent Educator and I see through that lens in working with teens and parents. I feel so fortunate to have found my professional identity in mental health counseling and I love what I do!
